Making Memories and Remembering...Memorial Day 2012

"They came home to joyous and short-lived celebrations and immediately began the task of rebuilding their lives and the world they wanted.  They married in record numbers and gave birth to another distinctive generation, the Baby Boomers.  A grateful nation made it possible for more of them to attend college than any society had ever educated anywhere.  They gave the world new science, literature, art, industry, and economic strength unparalleled in the long curve of history.  As they now reach the twilight of their adventurous and productive lives, they remain, for the most part, exceptionally modest."

This book impacted me a lot when I read it in 2000.  My dad and Kim's dad were both World War II veterans.  I never realized until I read this book, how much these men and women did for our country.  Now I love to read books and see movies about World War II.  My father did not talk about the war and it helps me to understand him a little better.
Memorial day is a great time to think about this great land we live in and to remember our lived ones that have  "moved on".
I have fond memories of going to the Brigham City cemetery with my grandmother when I was young.  Our relatives would be there and they would talk forever...and ever.
Remembering Bryce

The program at the SF cemetery is a favorite with me.  I have heard many inspiring stories from Veterans.

Can you tell he is smiling for the camera?

It was AMAZING to see all the decorations and flowers!
I have always enjoyed the programs at the SF cemetery and now I look forward to remembering Bryce.    Brooke brought Bryce's favorite drink, grape Gatorade.  I had Whit drink a lot of it first before we put it on the headstone because someone took the last one.  We know no one wants a half drunk Gatorade!  It reminded us of Bryce's soda bottle that sat on his shelf in his bedroom forever when he was in high school.  Kira had brought it back from Ecuador for him.  He finally told Dallin he could have it since he didn't like to drink pop.  Dallin had a hard time not laughing as he had drunk the soda pop many months before and replaced it with colored water.

Spanish Fork trail...we rode our bikes around SF and then cooled off with....

Hawaiian Shaved Ice!!!!!Yum.

This used to be Whit's favorite place but they took way too long on this day and he says he is NOT going back.

Kira is using a very heavy hand sander.
I saved the best part of Memorial Day for last.  We had a work "party" and sanded the fence.  The last time it was stained was way long ago when Bryce and Dallin did it and they were in Middle School.  What is a holiday without some work?  That evening after everyone went home (that would be Brooke's family), we stained some of the fence.  It looks a lot better!

In summary, we  had a great visit with McKay and Loida in China.  We got up early (for a holiday)  and they ate their dinner ( it was 10 p.m. their time) while they talked to us on Google Chat.   This week, McKay and Loida are teaching one day at a school they want to work at ( it is like an interview to see how they do with Elementary kids). Tyler is flying to Wisconsin this week for a job interview.  Dallin just keeps posting these cool pictures of where he is on his tours and how much he likes the Japanese families he is taking around  to Sedona, Grand Canyon ,Monument Valley and Route 66 .  As I mother, I just keep praying he will stay awake while he drives all these places and that Tyler and McKay will end up where they will be happy and do the best life ever.  Hooray for Holidays!  Thank you to all the Service men and women!  We remember.
