Hiking 9990 and lessons learned

Kim, Brooke and I decided that we would spend Bryce's birthday hiking up to his favorite place in The Canyons. That would be 9990. From there,Bryce would climb up the last tip of the mountain and snowboard in the back country off the top. We took his phone and played the Modest Mouse song he loved...World At Large. ( If the world's at large, why should I remain? ) This is what I learned: when we got off the gondola and onto the trail, we missed a point and found ourselves at the bottom of the chairs that take you to the top of 9990. We looked up and knew that if we followed the chair lift we would make it to our destination. It reminded me of standing at the entrance of the Empire State Building and looking up to the top. I told Brooke and Kim...you are crazy. There was no trail and it was very, very steep and far away. They started anyway and so I followed and slowly we assented to the top. The view was amazing. We sat in silence for some of the time. Just thinking and listening to the World at Large. Life is so much like that hike at different times in our lives. We think ...no way can I do that. But then we start and we take it a day at a time and we come to a point where we know we have arrived/ made it. It is a great feeling--on top of the world kind. The hike on Bryce's birthday was very symbolic for me as I feel I have arrived at a turning point in my life. I am ready to move on. Yipeeeee. Happy Birthday Bryce. I don't know if they celebrate in heaven but we had a great time here.

Nat's book

Natalie's book is now in print! You can buy/see it at: If you click the link on Nat's website she makes a little bit of $ but the Authorhouse price is much better. If you want a signed copy (Mom and Dad, yours is in the mail) just mail us your address (tylerchristensen@tyandnat.com) and we'll send you one... I think we can do it for about $18/hardcopy, or $13/paperback.

It's been really great looking through the book. Natalie is happy with how it turned out and she's just been glowing since we got our copy--all that hard work is paying off. She won't get rich off this book (she's already been paid and won't benefit from royalties) but she accomplished one of her life goals of publishing her artwork. It just goes to show you can accomplish anything you set your mind to (at least if you're as determined as Natalie). Way to go Natta!

Weekend News/ Happenings

This is goin' be hard to believe but I totally didn't take pictures at all this week and we had so many interesting things going on.
Saturday morning was the Stake Preparedness Fair. Kim was the keynote speaker. A favorite Christensen story that he shared will be included at the end of this excerpt. This would be the week of wedding ...some weeding--big difference with just one letter. We worked on the Wollenzien's yard and I sliced my little finger thinking it was a bush while pruning. We spent time setting up each night that week after weeding for the Voorhees/ Oates wedding reception. On Saturday, I thought I was going to throw up while we were setting up but I am sure it was because of the heat. Luckily during the beginning of the reception, clouds rolled in and it cooled off. It was a fun evening. Lots of people stayed a long time. We were helping to clean up until 10p.m. but according to the Wally's, the Voorhees were still packing things up until 1 a.m. Ohhh.
My weeds are still bigger than my garden plants ( talking about weeding).
We went ice skating after the Preparedness fair on a day that hit 100 degrees and it felt so cool and refreshing to be on the ice.
Today (Sunday) was the Oquirrah Temple dedication. Brooke and Whit came last night after hiking Timp. My mom came this morning and we all went to our Stake. It was a wonderful experience. Then while we were fixing marinated chicken kabobs for dinner, Jordan Langston showed up with a small Book of Mormon that had been covered in zebra and buffalo. It had the shape of Africa in the zebra fur. I have seen many missionaries bring home covered scriptures like that but Bryce didn't have anything with skins when he came home. We were happy to have Jordan stay for a visit and tell us more about Africa and the Wallys came also since we thought they might be tired from the reception. John was very quiet which supported my assumption. It was a great weekend with lots to remember. Here is the great story from Grandma Booth.
Grandma was widowed twice and accepted the challenge of caring for her five small children. It was necessary for her to go to work again in the mill in order to support her family. She earned a very modest income but managed without financial assistance from anyone. It was in the middle of the depression and the welfare truck would move down the street stopping at every house to deliver commodities except to the Booths house. No welfare went into that home and it was the only home in the block that didn't have a father. She worked in the mill as a weaver and every time she got the opportunity she would work a double shift, going to work at 7 a.m. and getting off at 11 p.m. She didn't have transportation so she would walk from the Peabody apartments to the Columbus mill. When the boys got old enough, she bought bicycles for them and they delivered groceries and newspapers to pay for them. Doris ( Kim's mom) worked at a "Five and Ten cent Store" on Saturdays. Whatever was earned by the family members went to mama and she managed to teach us the value of money and the blessing of work. After Sunday school each Sunday as she was leaving church, she would ask the service men if they had a place to go for dinner and every Sunday there would be from six to thirteen service men at her home for dinner. Se often said that she never knew how many pairs of paratrooper boots would be under her table at meal time. It was during the time of rationing but no matter how many she had for dinner she always had food left over. We learned from this experience that the account of the Savior feeding the 5,000 with 5 loaves and 2 fishes was really true because we saw the surplus in our home each week.

Receptions

I have been really bad about keeping a journal lately...longly. I can't even think what I did this week. These are pictures from Jackie's reception. Fabiola is from Chile. She was visiting Brooke. It was wonderful to see all the family and visit with them. It was nice to be in Brigham and stay with Kim's mom overnight. We went to the Stuart's reception and visited the Reeders. We had somewhat of a Dallin and Preschool Friends reunion weekend. We saw Kathy and Celeste Wouden at BYU. We went to Amy's reception in Brigham. At her reception we saw the Jardines and heard how Kenny was doing in Canada. Celeste, Amy and Kenny were all part of a neighborhood preschool that we did for two years before Dallin started Kindergarten. We have fond memories and fun pictures to remind us of those great times. Amy is the first to get married. Dallin, Kenny and Trevor are on missions. Celeste is now at BYU. That leaves Kristen...she is on Dallin's facebook but I don't know where she is. Where does life go? It was a great weekend to catch up with family and friends. We came home to go to a Single's meal and meeting. There we met the Gelisons who have a son in the Sapporo Japan mission. Definitely a Dallin Weekend! Miss you Dallin.

The Party's Over

The Trek is over, Lake Alice is a sweet memory, the kids have all come and gone, and now YW camp is done...sorta. We still have some certifications to finish up. August is the month of birthdays and I am found sorely lacking in doing something. Wha. It has been a fast and crazy summer. Weeds are the prominent feature of my yard...unseen in years past. My tomatoes that were a source of pride are pathetic. Out of all the muck, I have had a profound moment this morning as I got ready for the day. I got out the Vaseline because my feet have taken a beating this summer and smiled as I took off the lid and saw the remains of what used to be a pretty full jar. Sharon found my Vaseline and had a hey day with it. Natalie was apologetic as she returned it to me. What seemed a bother to Natalie was a sweet reminder to me this morning of little hands, busy feet, and a darling smile. I love seeing these precious objects that scream...Grandkids on the loose! What a joy it is to have family come home and how little those things matter to me. They are just stuff. I hope she had fun when she squished it all over! I love being a Graaama. I love being a Mom. Who cares about weeds anyway?
